“Better Than” Our Old Relationships: Rewiring Old Connections As A “New Man”

I. Who is God and what is the Gospel?

a. We are broken and sinful, we needed Jesus and, in response, He rescued us.

II. Jesus and the Gospel’s impact in history

a. History is dotted with people that made an impact because of the Gospel.

III. Jesus and the Gospel defined in Colossians 1-2

IV. Gospel transformation described:

a. The “New Man” is supposed to be different and do “New” things (Eze. 36:25-27).

V. The “New Man” is counter-cultural, approaches relationship differently.

a. A Word to wives (Col. 3:18)—equal in God’s sight (Gal. 3:28-29)— reflective of His Character.

b. A Word to husbands (Col. 3:19)—tender head of the family—reflective of Christ’s loves for the Church (Eph. 5:25).

c. A Word to children (Col. 3:20)—obedient to parents—reflective of our love for Christ.

d. A Word to parents (Col. 3:21)—builders of proper image bearers—reflective of our reliance on God.

VI. The “New Man” approaches work differently.

a. “Bondservants” and “Masters” are both under God, come under God’s Kingdom authority (Col. 3:22-4:1).

VII. The “New Man” simply loves and obeys because God did that for us (1 John 4:19).

VIII. The “New Man” lives differently (1 Pet. 4:6-11).
